Do I need a permit to work in the Netherlands?

Whether you are allowed to work in the Netherlands depends on your nationality. You are free to work in the Netherlands if you have the nationality of a country that is part of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland. If you have another nationality, conditions apply.

Please note: you must have enough money to take care of yourself for at least 3 weeks before you will start with your new job.

You need to make sure all your documents are valid: ID card, Passport, bankcard and driver's license.

Apply for a citizen service number (BSN) 

To be able to work in the Netherlands, you need a citizen service number (burgerservicenummer - BSN) . We will explain how to apply for your BSN.

How do I apply for a BSN?

The citizen service number (burgerservicenummer- BSN) is a unique number for everyone who has to deal with the Dutch government. If you come to live or work in the Netherlands, you can obtain a BSN . To do so, you must register with your municipality. You must then go to town hall in person with a valid identity document. You will receive your BSN immediately after your registration. 

If you do not live in the Netherlands, or you will only live there for a period shorter than 4 months, then you can register as a non-resident in the Non-residents Records Database  (RNI). You can register with 1 of these municipalities. You will receive your BSN after registration.
